TOP 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2009
#10 – SHERLOCK HOLMES
Kudos must go to Guy Ritchie for the fact he has managed to avoid going all Wild Wild West and giving the past that weird “future science in the past” angle, which he easily could have done here.
Think of it as a summer superhero flick, except instead of lazer vision – our hero has the power of “deduction”. [Read The Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $65.3 MILLION +
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : TBA
#9 – THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR PARNASSUS
Quite clearly, this isn’t a story as cut and dry as “GI JOE has to save the world : The End” – and thank Christ for that, because Gilliam has once again crafted something truly sublime with The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. [Read Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $0.1 MILLION +
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $23.7 MILLION
#8 – 500 DAYS OF SUMMER
Such a perfectly fresh take on the recently over-crowded “Indie Love Story” market. Former 3rd Rock From The Sun youngster Joseph Gordon-Levitt shines, and also proves he is one of the hottest properties on the market, harking back to the days of Matthew Broderick and John Hughes with a killer song and dance number.
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $32.3 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $57 MILLION
#7 – WATCHMEN
With a running time of just over two and a half hours, Watchmen is the very definition of a unique and sprawling epic – a Gone With The Wind of the comic book world.. [Read Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $107.5 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $183.8 MILLION
#6 – MILK
Milk is one of those rare movies you walk into dreading and walk out of out completely blown away by. In fact, it almost feels and plays out like a political version of The Mighty Ducks. Cake Eaters… [Read The Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $31.8 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $50.1 MILLION
#5 – Up!
The beauty of Up is that not only does it surpass the film making quality of the sublime Wall-E (there is a heart achingly wonderful opening sequence which, like Wall-E, manages to captivate it’s audience without a single word of dialogue) – but also manages to inject that colourful mainstream fun of Toy Story, Monsters Inc and The Incredibles. [Read The Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $292.9 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $702.7 MILLION
#4 – DISTRICT 9
It’s Cloverfield meets Alien with a dash of Transformers – the ultimate blockbuster recipe – and is deliciously layered, fresh and utterly captivating from beginning to end. Peter Jackson produced this – but probably should have opted to direct it instead of the stinker The Lovely Bones. [Read The Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $115.6 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $203.6 MILLION
#3 – INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
After copping his fair share of flack about Death Proof (which is an under rated B-Grade gem if you ask me), Quentin Tarantino exploded back into the mainstream with a Nazi Killing flick which broke all the rules (literally… of history and fact) and was just as visually and stylistically strong as any film of 2009 if not moreso.
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $120.8 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $316.4 MILLION
#2 – AWAY WE GO
This wonderfully indie-vibed love story will either fall into the “I Love It” or “It Bored The Shit Out Of Me” category, depending largely on where your heart and mind currently sit within your own life.
For hopeless romantics, this one might just offer you the insight and “Hey, They Are Just Like Me!” fix that you are craving… while those less inclined to believe in that “Soul Mates nonsense” would be well advised to steer clear and see 2012 for the fifth time in a row.. [Read The Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $9.4 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $9.9 MILLION
#1 – THE BROTHERS BLOOM
Rachel Weisz is amazing (which is huge, as she usually is quite on the nose) in Rian Johnston’s instant classic, as is Adrien Brody in an eccentric little bundle of joy which most will assume is the scientifically created love child of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels , Wes Anderson and Oceans 11… [Read The Full Review]
U.S. BOX OFFICE : $3.5 MILLION
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE : $3.7 MILLION

The hangover didn’t get metioned at all?!
And I think you should’ve made this list after avatar and sherlocK holmes was released
coz they were good
Hey Trisha.
The Hangover was fantastic, easily in the Top 20 best of the year and probably in the Top 2 in terms of comedies – but nowhere near Top 10 overall.
Avatar was very close to #10 (but the fact that 10 movies could have been made for the same price makes you wonder if it’s good enough – aside from the hype – overall). But there is no denying it it was an impressive film.
As for Sherlock Holmes, that did did make it to #10 (for pure popcorn enjoyability), although, was very lucky to make it into the Top 10. It has been a great year for flicks. Also “Drag Me To Hell”, “Adventureland”, “Sampson & Delilah” were also on the shortlist.
