The Blind Side (Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw) : Movie Review

Sandra Bullock’s Oscar nomination for her performance in The Blind Side means one of two things : either the Academy is now paying attention to low key performances where an actor keeps the flashy stuff to a minimum, or there wasn’t a lot of great roles for women in 2009.
This true story of a rich white family who adopted a burly black teenager, who then turned out to be a great defensive footballer, really requires audiences to either be really interested in gridiron or really interested in the true story of Mike “Big Mike” Oher.
Otherwise, you’ll be left waiting for drama that never really arrives.

Sandra Bullock : Over-Rated in The Blind Side?
Once Mike (Quinton Aaron) falls in the sights of Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock), it’s basically clear sailing for him as she takes him in, clothes him, and makes him one of the family (with the full support of her family).
There’s the occasional hiccup as they figure out how to get the best out of him in the classroom and the football field, but otherwise it’s all smooth sailing.
Sandra Bullock’s performance as a decent, caring southern matriarch is solid, but not exactly what you think of when you think of an Oscar. She might be steely and determined, but that’s pretty much what Bullock does in about 80% of her roles and she’s not out of her comfort zone here.
It’s an uplifting true story without a doubt…
It’s just not much more than that.
