Given that the Beatles were spurred on to produce Sergeant Pepper by the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds album, the mind can only boggle at the chain of inspiration that might have eventuated had the Beach Boys been able to complete their legendary ‘lost’ Smile album at the height of the 60s.

Between the summer of 1966 and early 1967, The Beach Boys recorded, in several sessions, a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band’s 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The sessions were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys’ SMiLE has never been released.
