Paranormal Activity, this decades most spin tingling chiller regarded as The Blair Witch Project in a house, has become a cultural sensation since hitting screens earlier this year. The thriller, made for just over $10,000… less than a new car, has already gone on to make over $107 million in the United States alone and is set to hit Australian screen on December 3.

The good news is – you will love it. The better news is that Paramount Pictures kept control of their relationship with the films director, Oren Peli, and has landed the U.S. distribution rights to his highly anticipated follow-up Area 51, Variety has revealed.

Not surprisingly, Oren Peli has been given a much larger budget to work with on this new extraterrestrial Areas 51 tale, with the film reportedly costing just under $5 million (which is still shockingly small for a major studio release).

The film reportedly employs the “found footage” narrative structure that Peli used in Paranormal Activity” (and others have used to similar effect in Cloverfield and the aforementioned Blair Witch) to tell the story of three teens whose “curiosity leads them to the notorious Area 51 portion of Nellis Air Force Base” in the Nevada desert.

Area 51 is expected to hit cinema screens some time in 2010.
