Earlier this week, exciting news surfaced as ‘band-of-the-moment’ Owl City reached #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with their hit song Fireflies.  Owl City (created by frontman, Adam Young) also broke a million little bubblegum pop hearts when Fireflies achieved the highest individual sales week, knocking off Anthony Callea’s hit The Prayer to surpass Platinum sales.

Having only been on the music scene since 2007, Owl City has quickly gained popularity across the US and beyond creating music that Young describes as “electronic pop being force-fed a healthy diet of keyboard smoothies”.

Whichever way you describe it, one listen to Owl City’s debut album ‘Ocean Eyes’ will have you howling for more.  And more you may have, as Young brings Owl City to Australia, supporting Cobra Starship on their Australian Tour.

Congrats to Owl City, looks like world domination for them.

Just need to correct something though, Anthony Callea’s The Prayer sold more than 2 X times platinum in its first full week of sales. Owl’s sales were very high last week for an individual weeks of sales which rocketed Fireflies to No.1 in the first week of the year on the Aria Charts flying past Ke$ha’s Tik Tok & surpassing 1 X platinum for their total sales since its release 6 weeks earlier. Selling such a large amount of unit’s like they did in one week hasn’t been seen since Callea’s still unbroken record breaking high of 147,000 units in one week which went on to sell more than 4 times platinum.

As the term ‘bubblegum pop’ is generally used to describe lightweight, disposable pop music contrived and marketed to appeal to pre-teens and teenagers, and The Prayer could by no stretch of the imagination be called that, I can only assume that you mean to infer that Callea’s fan base are pre-teens or teenagers. Thank you for the compliment! I haven’t been one of those for about 30 years. ;)
