Whilst it’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new from ARIA award winning Australian favourite Gotye, the man behind the music, Walter De Backer has exclusively informed WATCH OUT FOR | MUSIC that he is currently writing new material for the follow up to his highly successful Like Drawing Blood.

“The last half-year I’ve been more concertedly trying to write new stuff” Gotye told WATCH OUT FOR in an upcoming exclusive interview [Watch the Full Interview Here].

“I still kind of bounce off sampling a lot. With the new stuff I’ve been trying to write there are a handful of songs that I’ve written at the piano…more traditionally from chords and melody as a starting point – I’m probably writing more condensed pop-format stuff” explains Wally DeBacker (aka Gotye).

“I can always throw sounds around and do things that I think are cool with them and trying out new effects plug-ins – but then bridging that and starting to write a lyric and maybe a chorus or melody – stuff that directs it into being some kind of pop song – I’ve felt I’ve had writers block moments”.

“Sometimes I’ve thought maybe I just need to make and instrumental/sample-based album with no vocals and just go in a different direction. But I haven’t done that. I’ve got at least half a record of vocal based pop-music” said De Backer.

When asked about this new direction, Wally kindly elucidated on this possible change format.

“I feel that having written half a new Gotye record… there might more stuff I want to explore – more expansive stuff than on any of the records I’ve ever done before. Maybe long-form arrangements, things that flow in different directions rather than have a tight pop arrangement. But at the moment it’s probably heading in more of a pop direction.”

He also indicated a change in his highly complex sampling methods as heard on Like Drawing Blood.

“I’ve sampled a lot more material – thousands of records compared to hundreds on Like Drawing Blood. The sampling is a bit more micro-level – there’s way more snippets of one shots and beats. And I’m chopping things up a lot more and pitching them a lot more.”

He said there is also more of a unique style with the sample based methods.

“I’ve tried to set myself the challenge of not relying on other people’s snippets of riffs and parts as much. So I’d say  more like 99 % of the new stuff – the melodies and the chords are all mine, not just someone elses chord progression that I’ve turned on its head, or added to or built on top of.”
