In what was already a stellar year by anyone’s standards, Australian alternative folk rockers The Drones have taken it one step further, snagging two AIR awards on Sunday, an awards night that recognizes the highest charting independent music. The Drones scored Best Independent Album for their fourth studio release Havilah, as well as Independant Artist of the Year.
They’ve also been nominated for three ARIA awards in Best Group, Best Rock Album, and Best Independent Release. And you would have to say that given their success of Havilah, they’re definitely going to be tough to beat!

The Drones: Riding the wave of success
Their increased popularity has been most noticable in their lists of sold-out shows, both here at home and abroad – not to mention their song Shark Fin Blues coming in at #1 in the Greatest Australian Songs of All Time poll, as voted by peers for J-Mag.
After their scheduled appearance at the UK ATP festival in December, The Drones are set to come back to Australia in preparation for the next album, after which they will once again feature in the sold out ATP festival in May – this time curated by none other than Pavement!
