Killers (Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl) : Movie Review

As tempting as it is to simply cut and paste pretty much anyone’s review of the Tom Cruise / Cameron Diaz two-hander Knight & Day – I’ll resist, for good reason too.

Just because Killers [Watch The Killers Trailer Here] is very similar to the Cruise box office bomb (and despite being yet another example of the always-popular but rarely-successful “spy romance” genre) it doesn’t mean Killers doesn’t have a few interesting aspects to it.

Killers : Better than Knight & Day

Attempting to put a failed romance behind her, Jen (Katherine Heigl) takes a European vacation with her hard-drinking mum (Catherine O’Hara) and her straight-shooting dad (Tom Selleck, working the moustache as hard as ever). There she runs into the suave Spencer (Ashton Kutcher), love blooms, and suddenly it’s two years later and they are living a quiet suburban life back in the USA.

… And then everyone they know starts trying to kill them because Spencer forgot to make clear that he used to be a government assassin and someone’s decided that he is a loose end that needs to be tidied up.

Yes, it does try the usual trick of trying to combine plenty of action (for the guys) with oodles of romance (for the gals) to create the perfect date movie, but unlike a lot of these films the two leads in Killers are both likable in their own rights and have decent chemistry together, so the romance side of things really works.

The action sequences aren’t bad either, and a running joke (wherein everyone in their lives turns out to be a deadly assassin out to collect the massive bounty on Spencer’s head) never really gets old.

Unfortunately, director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde) undoes all his good work with a final twenty minutes that fizzles out in a major way.

It’s not enough to ruin what is otherwise a well-made and consistently satisfying piece of fluff, but it does turn what was shaping up to be something special in the spy romance genre into just another film that’s not-quite-there.
