It’s been quite a while since the world went ape shit over Joaquin Phoenix’s alleged “melt down” on Letterman. It’s possibly one of the most infamous “is it real or is it fake” moments on television since Andy Kauffman had his way with the American public.

If you haven’t seen it, watch Letterman in fine form as he goes to town on the unresponsive Phoenix [Then watch Phoenix's Return to Letterman in 2010] :

While Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck (who was filming the entire “change from actor to rapper”) consistently claimed it was legit – most of us felt it was just an excellent publicity stunt. However, all will soon be revealed with the film I’m Still Here [Read our Review here] being picked up and set to hit cinemas.

And, bear in mind, Letterman was a regular callaborator with Andy Kauffman’s pranks – so it’s no coincidence that Phoenix chose to melt down with Dave and not, say, Leno.

The flick is set to hit cinemas in September through Magnolia pictures who have released this very cool (if not slightly The Social Network inspired) poster.

Again, it reveals very little about the flick – but be sure, the truth has got to come out at some time… and the time is September.

And for those who don’t believe the whole “rap” thing has happened – make sure you watch the “on stage meltdown” below…

And just to confirm how crazy…

Ok, enough build up – let’s show you what all the fuss is about. The first official trailer for the film which still doesn’t resolve the “hoax” or “no hoax” deal – but it sure as hell is captivating. It’s gonna be a gooden kids!
