We’ve been waiting a long time for Superman to return to our screens. Bryan Singer gave it a whirl but opted for romance over action and audiences didn’t respond (although, it must be said, Singer’s Superman made more than The Green Lantern which has already been green-lit a sequel… go figure).

Anyhew, Watchmen and Suckerpunch director Zack Snyder (the heir to style-over-substance thrown once Michael Bay dies) has taken the reigns and after months of waiting we finally get our first glimpse of the new and improved Superman Henry Cavill in the new and improved Superman costume.

Here it is…

What do you think? It’s very Watchmen isn’t it? I don’t know when all superheroes had the “let’s all make our costumes out of those scale-like Ian Thorpe swim suits”, but it appears Superman was present.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, things look promising for The Man Of Steel. The cast, for starters, is phenomenal.

The film also stars three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, as well as Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne (“The Matrix”) as the first ever black editor-in-chief Perry White.

We can’t forget Clark Kent’s adoptive parents Martha and Jonathan Kent this time played by the excellent Diane Lane and Academy Award winner Kevin Costner.

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award winner Russell Crowe.

Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.

Currently in production, “Man of Steel” is slated for U.S. release on June 14, 2013, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. “Man of Steel” is yet to be dated in Australia.

Until then, here is Superman from his previous lives…
