Ladies and gentlemen of Pop Culture, the 1980s nostalgic-cash in floodgates have well and truly been opened (with Ghostbusters 3D on it’s way, along with Predators and a new Aliens movie) with confirmation that Joe Dante’s Gremlins will be making a return to the big screen… and, of course, it’ll be in 3D.
When you think about it, a new Gremlins flick couldn’t be hitting screens at a better time. After years of having to endure woefully forgettable and lifeless CGI creatures in Garfield, G-Force and Alvin & The Chipmunks, Spike Jonze has reminded cinema goers what it’s like to actually BELIEVE in mythical characters onscreen again with Where The Wild Things Are.
And you can sure as hell bet that his inspiration stems firmly from the likes of 80s classics like The Goonies, The Never Ending Story and Joe Dante’s Gremlins series.

Gremlins : Goin' Avatar On Yo Asses
According to MarketSaw, “Another Gremlins movie is coming to the silver screens and it will be in stereoscopic 3D! It is in the early stages with still lots of hurdles to pass, but it is being developed”. The report does specify “This is not a 3D conversion of the original… to be clear”.
The question is, will the 3D be in CG – thus ruining the very appeal of the franchise?
It could be so, according to Cinemablend, who say “In 2006, Dante said there would be a third installment to his series but that he more than likely wouldn’t be doing it”, suggesting that “Dante seemed convinced that the charm of his movies was in the puppetry and now in a world ruled by CGI his slimy green creations would be ruined”.
So here’s how we break it down – GREMLINS 3 IN 3D (Yay!), GREMLINS 3 IN 3D WITH CGI MONSTERS WHO DON’T ACTUALLY SPLURT GOO ON THE CAMERA LENS (Boo!).
We’ll keep an eye on this one – but until then, let’s enjoy some classic Joe Dante inspired madness…
