With voting for the first annual SYN FM COLDEST 100 COUNTDOWN [you can get your vote in here] heating up, we’d thought we would check out some of the best of the nominees so far.

Deep Blue Something is today’s COLDEST 100 highlight, harking back – again, to the mid 1990s. They were an American rock band best known for the hit single “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

The group was founded in 1993 in Texas by students Todd and Toby Pipes (who, I’m assured, aren’t secretly porno stars… despite the awesome names), Clay Bergus and John Kirtland. Bergus left the band before “Tiffany’s” became a hit (what a rocket scientist) and was replaced by guitarist Kirk Tatom, but eventually returned to the role.

So, when you think about it, he is kind of like the Jay Leno to Tatom’s Conan O’Brien.

Originally, the group called themselves Leper Messiah, but decided to change the name after seeing this name attracted mostly heavy metal fans, due to the Metallica song of the same name. Hardly in synch with the bands poppy roots.

The band’s first record, 11th Song, is from 1993. In 1994 (and again, on another label in 1995) the band released their second album, “Home” which featured “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” that reached the Top 5 on the charts in the USA and #1 in the UK.

The lyrics of the song, of course, are inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s performance in the classic film “Roman Holiday”.

It’s a kick-ass tune, and one that well deserves votes in the 2010 Coldest Countdown – VOTE HERE.
