Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has revealed that his band are now into production of their follow up to their highly successful Young Modern.
In an interview with Triple J where he paid tribute to departing breakfast presenter Robbie Buck, Johns revealed on radio that he is happy to be back in Newcastle relaxing for the summer after a ‘thorough’ few months in New York writing material for the next Silverchair album.
This will be Silverchair’s 6th studio album. Most importantly, however, it will follow what are arguably two of their most ambitious and successful works.
On his brief time spent in the city that doesn’t sleep, Johns was quite open on his productivity:
“It ended up coming along pretty well. I had pretty serious bout of writer’s block but then something snapped that needed to snap and I ended up writing a few things that I was happy with. Then I came back to Australia and met up with the band and we did some more demo-ing’.
He reported that the new album will head back to the Silverchair rock soound.
“I guess it’s dirtier, it doesn’t feel as polished and pop but the mind difference is there’s a lot more experimentation with instruments. I think there’s only guitar there’s only guitar on about four songs so far out of fifty. So I’ve got synthesizers… it’s weird because it sounds like there’s a lot more going on than there actually is on a lot of the tracks’ he told Triple J.

Have they got another hit album up their sleeves?
What the album will ACTUALLY sound like is anyone’s guess. I think we’ve learnt by now not to accept the gratuitous use of phrases like ‘getting back to our roots’ and ‘going in a new direction’ – both of which are usually found within the same sentence, which is just puzzling!
What we can expect is something in line with a less-guitar driven Young Modern. One would hope that the lack of guitar is an indication of his intention to put some more string arrangements throughout like Diorama.
According to Johns, it’s hoped the new album will be out some time next year.
