Bronson (Tom Hardy, Matt King) : DVD Review

What is it about insanity, violence and murder that drives the movie public wild? Between the success of Hostel and Saw, along with the cult status of sadistic mind-benders A Clockwork Orange, Funny Games and now the wondrously bonkers Bronson – it’s a wonder the human race hasn’t wiped itself out yet.

Bronson does little to quash our fascination with the darker side of humanity, following the “true” events that see a hot headed 19 year old go from “small time crook” to one of the UK’s most infamous prisoners. Originally sentenced to 7 years in jail, Michael Peterson (who creates the alter ego “Charles Bronson” during a stint as a bare knuckle boxer) has subsequently been imprisoned for 34 years, 30 of them in solitary confinement.
Bronson is a truly beguiling and often surreal character study, harking back to the stylistic quirks of Trainspotting, which is simultaneously captivating and incredibly unnerving.
Tom Hardy’s chilling yet charming take on “Bronson” is faultless, on par with Eric Bana’s “Chopper”, and you can’t help but see him taking on the role of a major Nolan-era Batman villain somewhere down the line.

Thought the lead actor did a great job at portraying the fit and violent prisoner. The movie itself just didn’t work. Almost like the ending is missing.
