Get ready indie and “romance of life” nuts – I think we’ve just found your new favourite movie of 2009… after 500 Days Of Summer… and Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist.
Exploring the comedic twists and emotional turns in one couple’s journey across contemporary America, Away We Go is the new movie from Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes, based on an original screenplay by novelists Dave Eggers (who also penned Where The Wild Things Are) & Vendela Vida, and featuring a kick ass indie music score by Alexi Murdoch.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ
I’ve always been a sucker for these kinds of movies. They are so numbing, yet at the same time, so unbelievably full of joy. They are also the main indicators that – no matter how individual you and your partner think you are – that love is the single most generic experience in the world.
It really does amaze me just how much something like Away We Go captures that sense of couples being trapped inside their own world, looking outside that bubble and saying “You guys are totally crazy, no one is in love or loves each other like we do”. Sadly… yes… they do. In fact, everyone does.
However, that doesn’t make the experience any less important. In fact, it’s actually pretty cool when you think about it.
But back the movie itself. The Office’s John Krasinski is at his “every man” best once again here, delivering just the right mixture of dull, quirky and “fun to be around” (without being silly). The same can be said of the excellent turn from SNL’s Maya Rudolph who just oozes talent and beauty from every pore of her body. It is the chemistry between these two that really sells Away We Go, possibly one of the most believable couples yet put on screen.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is also excellent in her hippy cameo role, despite the fact that (while still gorgeous) she manages to always look like someone has just injected horse tranquilizers into her face.
Think of it as the “10 Years On” sequel to Garden State that we all want, but will never otherwise be made – except with a less mopey Zach Braff bringing the mood down.
Away We Go is one of only truly enjoyable film experiences of the year. Do not miss it!
WATCH OUT FOR
The best (and possibly only?) cunnalingus based joke to ever open a feature film… “You taste different”. Isn’t love grand!
