A Very Libertines Christmas / Reunion : Music News

Oh what a year it’s been for The Libertines.  The usual flare-ups involving Pete Doherty have circultated the worldwide media with amazing speed. But amongst al the usual media beat-ups, there has been another story unfolding. A story that may eventualy tell of the one of the most spectacular reunions of recent history. If you have found it hard to keep up, here’s just a little re-cap of what’s happened so far…

Pete Doherty has confirmed that the band who brought him to the forefront of our consciousness, The Libertines, would be getting back together in 2010. At least he would like to. Seemingly, the only thing getting in the way was the very thing that brought about the bands rapid rise to fame: Pete Doherty and Carl Barat’s ‘fiery’ relationship.

According to NME, Doherty has said that The Libertines would definitely reform for shows in 2010, perhaps even without Barat.
The pairs often heated friendship hit an all-time low after Doherty burgled Barat’s flat in a passionate, drug-induced rage. Shortly after making-up and recording their second, self-titled LP, Pete’s drug habbits became too much for the band and they began to tour without him for short period of time before Barat formed break-away band Dirty Pretty Things. Doherty, who remained shell-shocked at the perceived show of disrepect began to invest more time with his own solo/side project Babyshambles, who’s success has very much rivaled that of what The Libertines conquered. Ever since, talk of a Libertines reuinion has been rife. Even more so, a reformation of its two visionaries has been hoped for.

Speaking to NME multiple times, Doherty has all but confirmed his desire to perform and perhaps write new Libertines material. Realistically though, that largely depends on Barat’s willingness to participate. To most Libertines die-hards, that re-union will never actually occur until Doherty and Barat are both on the stage performing and actaully getting on.

After performing a comeback show earlier this year on May 16 featuring Pete, Carl and Garry Powell on drums,  fans had their collective hunger momentarily satiated. All appeared well and good.  But the big question on people’s lips at the moment is whether or not there will be something more permanent? Will there be any more material?

According to Doherty there will be. He told NME after their performance”I think we’re gonna make a record and tour. Get The Libertines to take it to the next step, next stage.”

Upon hearing this we were delighted. Pete was already thinking about new records. Carl was hanging out with Pete again as they use to back in their destructive days. All seemed good and proper with the world.

However Carl has doused the flames slighlty with his claims that we might have to wait a little while given his commitments with Dirty Pretty Things.

What do we make of all this? I’m not overly certain myself. Although they haven’t competley ruled out the prospect of a reunion, I personally wont be a sold until they’re all up on stage performing again, trumpeting the release of their latest album.

As Doherty has said,”It’s going to happen, you know. But there’s Biggles (Barat) to worry about.”
